An Outdoor Adventure in Cape Girardeau

Saturday morning, get your weekend rolling with a visit to the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center.  The system of hiking trails behind the center is a hidden gem, and features varied terrain and a cathedral of trees.  Inside you’ll find an indoor beehive (spot the Queen Bee!), aquariums filled with catfish, salamanders, two-headed snakes and more.

After a stop for lunch, spend the afternoon on two wheels!  Rent a bike from Cyclewerx and take off on the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail that winds it’s way through Cape Girardeau.  After you bike the 5.5 mile traill, head off-trail and bike downtown and hop on the newly extended Cape Riverfront Trail that follows the Mighty Mississippi. Wrap up your day at the Old Bridge Overlook, with views of barges headed up and down river from the art deco portal of the 1928 “Gateway to the Ozarks” bridge.

Experience the best view of the Mississippi River around at Trail of Tears State Park on Sunday morning.  The ADA accessible overlook provides panoramic views of the river from high atop a bluff and is not to be missed.  Trails with a variety of distance and difficulty that feature river views, bluffs and more and the visitors center provide an afternoon of fun and adventure.

Wrap up your outdoor adventure at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, home to one of only four covered bridges left in the state, immaculate picnic grounds, a short hike to the Bollinger family cemetery and tours of the four-story mill.
