The Month Ahead in Cape Girardeau: July 2014

Here are just a handful of reasons to enjoy Cape Girardeau during the month of July:

The steamboats return to Cape Girardeau’s riverfront this month! The Queen of the Mississippi will dock on July 2nd and the American Queen will dock on July 14th.

Cape Girardeau’s two farmer’s markets are in full swing throughout the month. The Cape Farmer’s Market takes place on Thursday afternoons in the back parking lot of West Park Mall, and the Cape Riverfront Market can be found in downtown Cape on Saturday mornings. Both offer the best local produce and homemade goodies around.

History comes to life at Fourth at the Fort at Fort D, Cape Girardeau’s only remaining Civil War fort. Re-enactors will celebrate the holiday with rifle and cannon fire while flying their flags proudly. It’s free and open to the public on the Fourth of July from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Kick back and watch the fireworks over the Mighty Mississippi on the evening of the Fourth; the show will start around 9:15 p.m., after the Spirit of America award is presented at 8 p.m. in front of the Common Pleas Courthouse with music by the Jerry Ford Patriotic Band.

Learn about pioneer tools and trade at the Red House Interpretive Center on Saturday July 5th.

The Cape Girardeau Public Library has lots of fun programs taking place throughout the month, such as Super Science Saturday, Butterfly Biology and Then and Now.

Is the car of your dreams waiting for you? Find out at the Smith’s Summer Collector Car Auction, July 11th and 12th at the Show Me Center.

Enjoy canoeing, archery, Creek Cruisin’ and more at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center throughout July. The Fiddles and Forests Concert on July 25th features Celtic jigs and foot-stomping Ozarks bluegrass with the Shortleaf Band. All of their many programs are free, too!

Work up a sweat for a good cause at the 5th Annual Hoops for Life 5K Run/Walk and 1.6 mile Power Walk. One of the biggest annual races in town, proceeds from Hoops for Life benefit the pediatric brain tumor research program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in loving memory of Sahara “Hoops” Aldridge. It’s a hot, hilly run or walk with hundreds of people to run with for a great cause.

The Municipal Band will serenade attendees at their weekly Wednesday night concerts at the Capaha Band Shell. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to this free concert under the stars.
