“New” Tech: Stepping Back in Time at the Glenn House

Built in 1883, the Glenn House is a Victorian home turned museum located in downtown Cape Girardeau. The house was home to David and Lula Glenn until 1915, after which it had several owners. Eventually the Erlbacher family donated the house to the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau with the intention for the home to be saved and turned into a museum. This is the part where Tom and Donna Grantham come in, as Tom is the current President of that Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau which owns and operates the Glenn House. Tom graciously sat down with me and filled me in on what’s new with this handsome old house!

Why the Glenn House, Tom?

“To me, our history and heritage are so important because it is a part of who we are, and where we come from. I enjoy sharing this local heritage with the community and visitors. The Glenn House is a great example of Victorian style, architecture and furnishings, but everyone should know the Glenn House story is so much more than just Victorian style and furnishings but about people, a community and life experiences.”

What’s your favorite part about the Glenn House?

“I have to say I enjoy everything about the house, however the “new” technology is something I particularly enjoy and almost always share with visitors. The “new” technology includes the indoor plumbing, electric lights, central heat, telephone and the electric call system and serves as a perfect example of the tremendous change that was taking place in Cape Girardeau and the world at that period of time.”

What’s coming up for the Glenn House this summer?

During the month of June wedding dresses from the 1800’s to the 1960’s will be displayed throughout the house. In September, local photographer Tom Neumeyer is sharing historic pictures of Cape Girardeau from the early 1800 and 1900s. A Victorian Christmas will fill the holiday season.

How do you all keep the house looking so sharp AND historically on-point – this home is amazing!

The Glenn House is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Support comes from visitors, members, special events and local sponsors and provides for the maintenance and operation of the house. That support has recently provided for the complete renovation of the second floor plaster ceilings and walls, replacing the wallpaper as well as refinishing the wood floors. The Glenn House story is 130 years long; you can help preserve the story for the next 130 years!

Many thanks to Tom for visiting with me about the Glenn House. Learn more about the Glenn House here, and stop by for a tour on Saturdays and Sundays May-October from 1 – 4 p.m.
