Add To My CalendarThe Fourth of July – a celebration of our nation’s birth! Join local Civil War reenactors on Wednesday, July 4, 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm at Fort D Historic Site in Cape Girardeau. During the Civil War the soldiers manning Fort D were very patriotic. Today, that history will be continued with demonstrations of rifle fire and cannon fire. Built under the direction of John Wesley Powell in 1861, the earthen walls of Fort D still survive. Visit with reenactors who are descendants of men who served in Powell’s Battery F, Second Illinois Light Artillery. From the ridge, view the Mississippi River and imagine Union steamboats that traversed the River heading north and south transporting needed provisions, soldiers, and the wounded. Take a moment to read the interpretive signs on the grounds and if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Wear your red, white, and blue and make Fort D Historic
Fort D Historic Site is located at 920 Fort Street (Off of Sprigg Street and 4 blocks south of MO Route 74)
