The Lanford Wilson New American Play Festival

A program of the Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre & Dance

The Holland College of Arts & Media | Southeast Missouri State University

Artistic Director: Kitt Lavoie

Executive Director: Kenneth L. Stilson

The Lanford Wilson New American Play Festival identifies and supports new plays that feature robust roles for college-aged actors, while providing a laboratory to train students in the skills and ethics inherent to working with living playwrights on new works.

Each evening from Monday, May 27 through Friday, May 31 will feature a staged reading of one of five full-length Official Selection plays, which were chosen from nearly 1000 plays submitted from around the United States.

At the end of the week, one of these plays will be selected to receive its world premiere in the 2024-2025 Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre & Dance Season and will be considered for publication by Concord Theatricals, the world’s most significant theatrical publishing company.

The evening of Sunday, May 26 and the afternoon of Saturday, June 1 will feature staged readings of programs of five short plays featuring exclusively characters in their late teens and early twenties. These ten short plays will be published as a collection and made available for production at university theater programs across the United States.

Each morning and afternoon of the festival will also feature workshops and seminars about playwriting and the new play development process by our
festival playwrights and top professionals from around the country.

The Lanford Wilson New American Play Festival is proud to support these wonderful new plays, and to bring to Cape Girardeau a look inside the process of how a play evolves from a first draft to a tested, production-ready script.
