The Wilderness is Calling: Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center

Nature is beckoning you to the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. Spend an afternoon surrounded by reptiles and fish, breathing in the crisp autumn air as trees dance in the distance. Or test your endurance by scrambling through the rough terrain of the White Oak Trace – each bend opening up to something new along your path.

We could say, “There’s always something going on at the Nature Center.” But that’s very much an understatement. We’re just hitting the highlights. You can find a complete list of events on the Missouri Department of Conservation website.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting the Nature Center is its perfect setting for family fun everyone enjoys.

– Get close to native wildlife at interactive exhibits and aquariums.

– Teach your kiddo how to fish in the kids-only pond, and hook catfish and bluegill.

– Travel into history with a collection of authentic Native American artifacts.

If you don’t want to stay inside the building, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the area.

– Hiking – The White Oak Trace offers two miles of hills, ravines and eye-catching scenery.

– Fishing – An adult pond is a great place to soak up some sun while pulling in catfish and crappie.

– Bird-watching – Bask in quiet serenity as native species flutter from tree to tree.

And don’t forget about the special events throughout the year.

– Fall Festival, Oct. 20, 2018 – Gather around the campfire, take a hike, get crafty and indulge in classic fall treats. All ages are welcome to join the fun.

– Nature Art: Wildflours, Oct. 27, 2018 – Southeast Missouri flowers serve as the inspiration for decorating (and eating) gorgeous cookies.

– Feeding Frenzy, Nov. 8, 2018 – It’s lunchtime! See the fish, amphibians and reptiles feast on crickets, worms, minnows and mice. It’s a sight to behold.

If you’re interested in other outdoor activities, find out where you can continue connecting with nature.
