Spring has sprung and May in Cape Girardeau is blooming with a colorful variety of events!

First Friday Fun

Galleries throughout downtown Cape Girardeau stay open late and offer artists receptions and snacks for First Friday with the Arts, Friday, May 1.

Before you stroll through local galleries, join in the Historic Preservation Walking Tour also on Friday, May 1. This year’s walk begins at Broadway and Frederick Streets and will wrap up at the Cape River Heritage Museum where you’ll find refreshments and historic displays.  Dr. Steven Hoffman is leading this year’s walk that includes a wide variety of architectural styles, and you can play along with the I Spy Cape! Contest

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center: Celebrating 10 Years 

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is celebrating 10 years of helping folks experience nature!  WildHeart in Concert on Friday May 1 kicks off the fun.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair for this free outdoor concert that will be held inside in case of inclement weather.  The party continues Saturday, May 2 with an assortment of programs for you to try including outdoor skills and animal ID to native plants and nature art.    

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all of the nature center reptiles, amphibians and fish happy?  Find out at Feeding Frenzy on Thursday, May 14, when animal care volunteers feed the hungry critters. 

Itchy and scratchy might be the first things that come to mind when you think about ticks and chiggers, but delve deep and learn how to prevent and deal with bites at Nature Center at Night on Thursday, May 14. 

Performing Arts

Daisy Meredith is the first girl from a public school to attend Grangewood School for Young Ladies.  Find out how Daisy Pulls it Off April 29-May 3 at the River Campus.

Join Stone Soup Shakespeare on the Cape Public Library’s lawn on Saturday, May 9 for a hilarious production of Much Ado About Nothing.  

Farmer’s Markets

The Cape Riverfront Market opens for the season on Saturday, May 2!  The SEMO Steel Drum Band will perform from 9-11 a.m., and homemade pancakes featuring locally made toppings of syrup, honey and preserves will be on hand.  

The Cape Farmer’s Market is rocking and rolling in the back parking lot of West Park Mall on Thursday afternoons from Noon – 5 p.m.

Musical Entertainment

Craft Brew Corner and United Way presents Dueling Pianos at the Arena Building on Saturday, May 9.  Spanky Entertainment out of St. Louis can perform and genre of music requested!

Southeast music department faculty, alumni and students are showcased in Chamber Music Sundays at Three on Sunday, May 10. 

The 11th Annual Western Swing Showcase kicks off on Thursday, May 14 at the VFW Hall and continues Friday May 15 and Saturday May 16.

Tunes at Twilight’s spring season begins Friday, May 15 with a performance by bluesy roots rocker Kraig Kenning.  Wil Maring and Robert Bowling take the stage with their country/folk/bluegrass blend at the Common Pleas Courthouse Gazebo on Friday, May 22 and The Cantrells will play their original folk and bluegrass music on Friday, May 29.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair, snacks and a beverage for this free outdoor concert series!  

The Oak Ridge Boys will play the country, gospel rock and everything in between they’ve been rocking out to since 1973 at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau’s event center on Sunday, May 24!

The 2015 Speaker Series at the Cape River Heritage Museum begins Saturday, May 2.  

Watch kids ages 7-17 race to the finish as they compete for a spot in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race at the Rotary Club Soap Box Derby on Saturday, May 2!

Arena Golf hosts a full day of family activities including a bounce house, face painting and more at Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 9.

Find new treasures at the Spring Garage Sale on Saturday, May 16 at the Osage Centre.

Enjoy an afternoon of historic games such as checkers, nine pines, graces and more at Children’s Historic Games at Bollinger Mill on Saturday, May 16.

See Cape Girardeau’s earthenworks Civil War fort in action at Memorial Day at Fort D, Saturday May 23, Sunday May 24 and Monday May 25.  Local re-enactors will salute the memory of fallen soldiers with rifles and cannon fire.

Live entertainment, a freedom ride, vendors and exhibits provide a weekend of fun at the Lawless Freedom Rally Friday May 29, Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31.
