Romantic backdrops: Exploring the city’s most scenic locales for marriage proposals and weddings

Love is in the air this month, and that makes it a popular time for marriage proposals. A recent survey found that as many as 6 million couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day each year*. If you’re pondering a future trip down the aisle (or just like to admire scenic views), check out some of Cape Girardeau’s popular backdrops for proposals, engagement photos and wedding ceremonies.

#1 Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge

At sunset, at daybreak, in spring, in summer, in fall or winter, the bridge rising over the Mississippi makes a memorable backdrop for any event, including engagements. There are multiple vantage points for viewing the bridge, from the downtown riverfront to scenic overlooks like the one at the site of the previous bridge.

#2 The Glenn House

If your significant other is a lover of history, the Glenn House’s impressive Victorian architecture makes a beautiful backdrop for a proposal or engagement photos. This historic home, originally constructed in 1883, now serves as a period museum and offers opportunities for private events. Contact the museum directly for details: https://www.glennhouse.org/

#3 Trail of Tears Overlook

A breathtaking view always makes a perfect setting for momentous occasions, and it’s hard to top the scenery at the Trail of Tears overlook. Expansive views of the Mississippi River and beyond create a beautiful spot to drop to one knee – especially if a sunset is involved.

#4 Bollinger Mill

Located in Cape Girardeau County, the Bollinger Mill Historic Site features a Civil War-era mill and historic covered bridge overlooking the rushing Whitewater River. The site is beautiful in all seasons and offers opportunities for picnicking, exploring and, of course, marriage proposals.
