Recapping the Total Solar Eclipse

August 21, 2017 was a day to remember! The sky put on quite a show, and we got to enjoy the day at the Cape Girardeau Sportsplex along with 3,000 new friends.  We welcomed folks from 18 U.S. States, five countries – England, Mexico, Canada, Lithuania and Australia – and filled up every hotel room, campsite and spare room in town. Streetlights automatically turned on, bugs came out, the temperature dropped and this celestial event was more than can be described. Here are some highlights from Monday’s event:

The Shawnee Sports Complex welcomed 170 eclipse watchers, the Osage Centre welcomed 25, Arena Park 50 and there were around 500 folks at Riverfront Park. The Cape Regional Airport hosted 65 planes and over 200 people, and the viewing party at Houck Stadium had 7,000 in attendance. 500 took in the show at the River Campus’s viewing party.

Mark your calendars for April 8, 2024, when Cape Girardeau will receive over 4 minutes of totality! We’d love to welcome you to our river city for another total solar eclipse.

Where did you watch the eclipse? What did you think?
