Pick up a Book!

In the movie, “You’ve Got Mail,” Meg Ryan’s character owns a small, independent bookstore struggling to stay in business, while a larger bookstore opens down the street. If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s a classic film starring Ryan and Tom Hanks, showcasing the story of two bookstores and an unraveling romance.

Cape is also home to a small, independent bookstore and a larger one across town, offering two different but delightful experiences.

Located in Cape’s Town Plaza, The BookRack was founded in 1977 as a used bookstore but now prides itself on specializing in used books by the “pickiest staff in North America,” new books and rare books.

Open every day of the week, The Book Rack offers a unique approach to repeat business. Customers receive store credit toward their next book when they bring a book back after reading it. Time to get reading!

For a different experience, step into Barnes& Noble, located in Westfield West Park Mall. Grab a Starbucks coffee at the onsite café and stroll around for hours. Barnes & Noble obviously has books of all genres, but also puzzles, and games for children and hosts events throughout the year like author signing days and story time for kids.

Another option for book lovers is the Cape Girardeau Public Library. If you’ve never been to the library, it’s time for a visit. This is not how you remember a library. It’s full of light at every turn, community meeting rooms and even an open-air terrace for your reading pleasure. Be sure to check their calendar for events almost every day of the month including programming specific to youth, teens and adults.

Vera Nazarian said, “Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.”

It’s National Bookshop Day so get out there and pick up a book today!
