Perfect Parks: Cape Girardeau’s unique parks and recreation areas

Spring and early summer are the perfect time to take a tour of Cape Girardeau’s unique parks and recreation areas. In total, Cape Girardeau offers 25 parks covering more than 660 acres of land – all with a variety of features and amenities. In honor of National Take A Walk In A Park Day, we’re sharing some highlights on a few of our favorites:

Arena Park

Great for: Kids of all ages (and adults too!)

Arena Park is famously home to the annual SEMO District Fair, but it also features 16 softball/baseball fields, tennis courts, sand volley ball courts and an outdoor FitZone – making it a great destination for outdoor recreation. The 90-acre park is also home to the city’s skate park, featuring skate decks, pool bowl, grinding pipe and steps and a turn wall.

Dogtown Dog Park

Great for: Canine lovers

Dogtown Dog Park is located within Kiwanis Park at 2100 Rotary Drive, and offers the exact amenities its name implies: A playground built specifically for dogs. The park is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and features plenty of room for running, playing catch and exploring.

Cape Rock Park

Great for: History and nature lovers

With just over 21 acres, Cape Rock Park offers a stunning view of the Mighty Mississippi, along with some insight into the area’s long history. The park marks the original trading post established by Ensign Girardot, the French soldier for whom the city is named.

Dennis Scivally Park

Great for: The perfect photo opp

Dennis Scivally is a small neighborhood park with beautiful shade trees and a historic stone bridge over the Walker Branch Creek. The setting is ideal for a photo shoot or a picnic, and also features a fun play area of younger kids.
