On Their Way to Heaven Raising H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks: Nunsense

When I stepped inside the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre last night for the final dress rehearsal of Nunsense, I was transported to the cozy gym-a-torium at Mt. St. Helens, run by the illustrious Little Sisters of Hoboken.  If you ever attended Catholic School (like I did, and my Grandma who also enjoyed the show with me last night), you’ll feel an instant sense of familiarity with the scuffed gym floor and statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.  The Rust Flexible Theatre is such a fun space to enjoy Nunsense in, as you’re steps away from the Sisters themselves…and be warned:  nuns roam throughout the audience!

Nunsense has a small, incredibly lively cast who make it clear how much fun they’re having with this thoroughly funny show.  We laughed and laughed through both acts as the nuns did their best to raise funds through a variety show (that you’re the audience of) to bury some of their dearly departed sisters, struck down by a rough batch of bad soup.  You’ll run into a street smart sister from Brooklyn, a ballerina sister, and Sister Mary Amnesia who’s just trying to remember her name, among others.

Just a few highlights include:  “Oh that drummer, I like him!  Hey, I’m a nun, I’m not dead!” and the fantastic dancing the sisters perform.  The audience participation really drew you in, and you won’t be able to help grinning away throughout the duration of the show.

Former Catholic school kid or not, you’ll love Nunsense.  Nunsense runs June 19-22 and June 26-29 with various showtimes. Don’t let this show pass by unseen…buy your tickets here!
