National Reading Month

Did you know reading can literally change your mind? It’s true! Science shows the network of circuits and signals in our brains gets stronger when we read. Our teachers always encouraged reading, and they’re right! There are many positive advantages to reading, including both physical and mental health benefits.

Some people read to reduce stress by entering another world through the written words on the page. Yet others read as a tool to help them fall asleep, barely making it through a page a night.

Reading builds vocabulary and encourages learning. Whatever the reason, pick up a book and head to one of these local quiet hangouts.

The first place that comes to mind relating to books is likely the library. In June 2022, the Cape Girardeau Public Library celebrated 100 years of service to the community. We are lucky to have such a beautiful public library. If you’ve never been there, check it out! And if you have been there, go back! Right in the middle of town, maybe stop in for a different lunch break. There are many welcoming nooks waiting for you and your novel of choice.

In addition to books and reading, the library also has a calendar full of local events, from preschool storytime and anime club to AARP tax assistance and even yoga! Plus, their spring book sale is Saturday, March 4.

As spring approaches, how about heading to a park to find some quiet time? Listening to the birds as you delve into a paperback will surely energize you! Did you know the Cape Parks &Recreation website has a “find a park” feature? Find A Park– check it out! The City of Cape Girardeau maintains 25 parks covering 662.5 acres. That’s enough to explore for a long time!

How about reading at a coffee shop? Maybe you want to preview a few books before settling on one. Stop by Barnes& Noble to grab a cup of Joe and settle in with a handful of magazines or books.
