Independence Day: A Piece of History in Cape Girardeau

It’s nearly Independence Day. Time to enjoy a backyard BBQ, watch fireworks, sing patriotic tunes and celebrate the independence of America!

But, if you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate the holiday, you can engage in an experience unlike any other.

We’re lucky to have a deep and rich history that has been well-preserved in Cape Girardeau. One of the many well-preserved historic spots here is Fort D.

Fort D is one of four forts built in Cape Girardeau in 1861 by the orders of General John Fremont. It was designed by engineers from St. Louis and is the only of the four forts to still exist intact. It served as a protection point for four years during the Civil War against the Confederate troops. In May of 1865, all Confederate troops surrendered and the war finally ended.

Over time, the forts were abandoned and disappeared, but Fort D remained. Now Fort D is a location that is seen as a historic landmark in the area. It was taken on as a project by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Turner Brigade Association and the Civil War Roundtable of Cape Girardeau and is funded by donations from kind visitors and patrons.

Additionally, the Fort is home to LIVE historical reenactments that are FREE to the public.

If you want to experience the historical site and an action-packed reenactment, there is no better time than the 4th of July. That day from 9 AM to 3 PM they will reenact a historically accurate celebration of Independence Day. From rifle and cannon fire to the flying of flags, this experience will certainly be exciting and impactful and one that you won’t forget.
