How to pull off a whale of a time on St. Patty’s day in Cape Girardeau

Whether you’re searching for a pint of Gat or the best corned beef and cabbage around, here’s where to go and what to do while proudly sporting your green and shamrocks

Americans have been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for over 280 years – that day-long jubilee honoring the heritage and culture of the Irish with head-to-toe green (an American novelty, incidentally), rounds at the local pub and general fanfare of all things Gaelic. When it comes to upholding Irish traditions, Cape Girardeau pulls out all the stops on March 17. So grab your mates, don your shamrocks and make plans for a grand time:

Enjoy Celtic Cuisine

Start your celebration by ordering a pint and tucking in to a classic Irish dish at Katy O’Ferrell’s Publick House. From Guinness Stew and Shepherd’s Pie to Corned Beef & Cabbage, Katy O’Ferrell’s has all of the Celtic cuisine you’re craving.

Find a Pot o’ Gold

You don’t have to traipse to the end of a rainbow to find a pot of gold! After grabbing a bite and a pint, head to the Century Casino. With slots, poker, roulette and more of your favorite games you can win big while having a blast.

Make sure to wear a shamrock while you’re trying your luck at the tables. Just like the color green, the idea of a shamrock equating to good fortune is another Americanized concept. In Ireland, a shamrock actually symbolizes rebirth. The plant is the official plant of Ireland and is sacred among residents.

Celebrate with a Pub Crawl

If you’re looking to venture out to the local bars for a good drink and good time, you’re in luck! The St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl is back for its 32nd celebration in downtown Cape Girardeau from 4 P.M. to 1 A.M.

Local bars participating include The Library, Ebb and Flow, 21 Taps, Shakers, Minglewood, Pour House, Rude Dog, Ragsdales, Port Cape, Coin-Op Cantina, Blue Diamond and Hotshots. They’ll even be doing giveaways at all the locations if you visit all twelve locations, so you won’t want to miss out on it!

Bonus points if you spot these St. Patty’s icons while you’re out and about (and no judgement if you’re the one wearing them!):

  • Someone sporting a top hat
  • Shamrock beads
  • Someone wearing a leprechaun beard
  • A “Kiss me I’m Irish” shirt
  • A kilt

So you’re all set to have a cracking great time on St. Patrick’s Day in Cape Girardeau. May the luck of the Irish be with you!
