How to Meet the Cape Girardeau Ghosts

Cape’s historical buildings have seen it all – booming businesses, parades, growth and unfortunately tragedies too. From battles to murders, more than a few souls have met their end in Cape Girardeau – and some of them never left.

Actors in Southeast’s Rose Theater avoid saying the name “Mary” for fear she will appear out of thin air. Travelers along Bloomfield Road occasionally hear shrieks from Mad Lucy, who has resided there for well over a century – since she suffered a mental breakdown. And a ghost named Belle often plays tricks on the staff at the Port Cape Restaurant.

These are just a few of the spirits that live in Cape’s supernatural dimension. And you’ve got a chance to get up close to some of them – if you’re brave enough.

Haunted Downtown Walking Tour

Available on weekends throughout October, this tour is designed for paranormal enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Follow a costumed guide into the past to hear tales of Cape’s former residents – what their lives were like, how they influenced the town and who’s still here. If you’re lucky, you might even glimpse a specter.

Boos on Broadway

To dig even deeper into Cape’s haunted past, join the midweek Boos on Broadway tour in October. From an opera house to a furniture maker to grisly murders, you’ll see a side of this town you never knew existed.

If you’re not up for a walk, connect with Cape’s ghosts from your armchair with a copy of Dr. Joel P. Rhodes’s “Haunted Cape Girardeau: Where the River Turns a Thousand Chilling Tales.” From crazed specters to children who never grew up, learn what otherworldly visitors may be right down your street. Grab a copy of this must-read collection of spooky local stories at the VisitCape office, located at 220 N. Fountain St.
