How to Make the Most of Autumn in Cape Girardeau

Golden and scarlet leaves are forming canopies of color throughout the region. But as we all know, gorgeous fall days are not guaranteed to last in the Southeast Missouri climate.

Make the most of the season before cold winter sets in.

Check out the scenery

Experience nature’s beauty as it’s meant to be enjoyed. Hike through the vividly colored woods leaves or bike along a trail with awe-inspiring views. Find the best spots.

Indulge in seasonal flavors

At the first hint of autumn, Cape’s local eateries break out limited-time flavors – whether they’re serving coffee, ice cream or pastries. Local favorites include maple, s’mores, apple pie and, of course, pumpkin spice. For a complete list of restaurants and coffeehouses in town, click here.

Attend a football game

Get loud when the home team scores a touchdown, clap to the beat of a marching band, pig out on concessions and mingle with friends and neighbors. Here’s when to catch the Cape Central Tigers and Southeast Redhawks in action.

Carve a pumpkin

Creating jack-o’-lanterns is a timeless fall tradition. Pick up your pumpkins at the farmers market before they’re all gone. The downtown Cape Riverfront Market is open Saturday mornings, and the Cape Farmers Market is open Thursday afternoons in the West Park Mall parking lot. But you better hurry; the markets close for the season at the end of October.

Expand your wardrobe

When cool weather sets in, T-shirts and sandals just don’t cut it. Stay warm and cozy with boots, scarves and sweaters. Cape’s boutiques boast this year’s latest styles, and our antique stores offer vintage clothing to suit retro tastes. No matter what you’re looking for, find a shop that has it.
