How to Enjoy Summertime in Cape Girardeau

It’s sunny and hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, but you’re perfectly cool sitting on the edge of a vortex pool at the water park, toes dangling in the cool water. Kids laugh around you – your daughter and a friend she just met at the lazy river. After you leave here, you’ll stop for ice cream. Or have a picnic in a local park. Or maybe skip rocks on the Mississippi River.

With so many options for summer fun, it’s a little difficult to decide how to spend a day in Cape. But here are some ideas:

Soak up sun

When the kids get out of school, Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center becomes the premier destination in town. Imagine six waterslides, a waterfall, a vortex pool and more – all in one place. If you’re wanting a tan, feel free to relax by the lazy river while the kids swim off their energy.

After trying everything at Cape Splash, you could go fishing at the Trail of Tears State Park or admire the rose garden in Capaha Park. Cape County Park North offers disc golf, fishing, a visit to the Conservation Nature Center and fun in Melaina’s Magical Playland

Hang out by the river

One advantage of Cape’s location is getting to relax on the banks of the Mississippi. Its waves form a perfect backdrop for a summer day, and many people walk along the banks to admire the historical murals on the floodwall, or they kick back and watch the barges come in.

The community also offers Tunes at Twilight in Ivers Square. The fall series of free live music kicks off on Aug. 10 with the country rock sounds of Baylor Wilson. Click here to view the complete lineup.

Meander downtown

The antique stores in our downtown district make visitors feel like they’ve stepped into a “Leave It to Beaver” episode – no heels or pearls required. And the boutiques always have something you didn’t know you needed but totally do. Learn more about Cape’s local retailers

When you need a break from bargain hunting, you don’t have to walk far to find a great restaurant. Bella Italia, Broussard’s Cajun Cuisine and 36 Restaurant & Bar, among others, excite taste buds with rich flavors. After all that shopping, you might have room for gourmet ice cream from Sugar Chic Creamery. The calories are worth it.
