Historic Weekend in Cape Girardeau

Walk the decks of a WWII tank landing ship, sit down for a Victorian tea, climb aboard a Flying Fortress B17, experience a Civil War era worship service and more – all in the same weekend in Cape Girardeau!

The LST Memorial 325 will be docked at Cape Girardeau’s Riverfront Park and open for tours Thursday, September 29 – Monday, October 3.  The LST participated in the D-Day invasion of the Normandy beaches in June 1944, and earned two battle stars for her supply trips during WWII. Now a museum, this living piece of history is the only remaining operational LST out of the 1,051 manufactured during WII.  Take a tour each day the LST is docked here from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and be sure to join us for the opening ceremony – full details are available at VisitCape.com/LST.

WWII history from the sea and the sky are both represented between the LST and the Flying Legends of Victory Tour!  A beautifully restored B-17 Flying Fortress will be on display and available for ground tours at the Cape Regional Airport Tuesday, September 27 – Sunday, October 2.

It’s such an honor to host these iconic pieces of history in Cape Girardeau!

But wait – there’s more!  Cape Girardeau Heritage Days features historic attractions open for tours and offering special events Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 with a kick off concert on Friday, September 29.  Music through the years by Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole Stomp, Steve Schaffner and Derrick Irwin and Jerry Ford’s Swing Band will be narrated by Mark Twain at this free concert.

Saturday Heritage Days events include a Victorian Tea at the Glenn House (pre-register here!), LST speakers, tours of Old Lorimier Cemetery, a presentation on architect J.B. Legg and much more.  Sunday Heritage Days events include a period worship service with the Front Porch Players at Fort D Historic Site and full military honors for two US Colored Troops at Fairmont Cemetery.  Get the full schedule of events at VisitCape.com/HeritageDays.
