Fish Frys in Southeast Missouri: A Seasonal Specialty

Deep fryers fire up on Friday nights in southeast Missouri in the late winter and early spring for a regional tradition of community fish frys during the Lenten season – and you don’t have to be a practicing Catholic to join in on the delicious fun, all are welcome!

Last Friday after work, my co-workers and I headed to the downtown Knights of Columbus Hall, paid our $9 and hopped in the buffet line for catfish hot out of the fryer, baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies and French fries.  Table length after table length of homemade desserts stretched out along one wall, and drink tables were crowded with lemonade and iced tea.  We filled our plates and found a spot to sit and tuck in.  Two plates of food later (you can go back for seconds) and I was happily licking my fingers, full and happy.  You just can’t get fish like this anywhere else!

Sample this fun, local and seasonal specialty at one of these area fish frys; everyone is welcome and you’ll be glad you did!
