Explore the Great Outdoors in Cape Girardeau on Foot

See the best Mother Nature has to offer on one of Cape Girardeau’s trails, with distances, landscapes and surfaces for any ability level!

Smooth Sailing

Looking for a paved trail?  The Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail is just under 5 miles long and goes right through the middle of Cape Girardeau; the section that runs through the Cape Woods is a personal favorite.  Multiple access points, restrooms and drinking fountains allow you to enjoy a long or short jaunt.

The Cape Riverfront Trail gets you up close and personal with the Mighty Mississippi, running right along the river in downtown Cape Girardeau.  A newly extended section adds another quarter of a mile to this flat, wide, paved trail in the shade of the flood wall.  Benches allow for a leisurely rest stop to watch a barge head up or downriver.

Shorter Hikes

Take a quick hike on one of these 2-hour-or-less trails and get a quick dose of Fall! The 2.25 mile Lake Trail at Trail of Tears State Park follows the hilly shoreline of Lake Boutin, and remnants of old homesteads can be spotted through the foliage.  Maple Hollow Trail in Cape County Park North is a quick 1 mile loop that traverses steep hills with neat rock featur es and a creek.  The White Oak Trace Trail system is also located in Cape County Park North, and allows you to customize your hike with different branches that all string together for a different experience every time.

Longer Treks

Looking for a lengthier outdoor adventure?  Head out to Trail of Tears State Park and set off on the Peewah Trail.  Weaving through the 1,300 acre Indian Creek Wild area with a wide variety of natural features, the Peewah Trail is a loop that totals 9 miles.  This trail leads you into the most secluded parts of Trail of Tears State Park, and backpackers can camp overnight at the designated area.

Explore the Great Outdoors in Cape Girardeau this Fall, by hitting the trail, getting hands on with nature at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, checking out a park and more!  Plan your outdoor adventure here
