Oliver-Leming House

Oliver-Leming House

The Oliver-Leming House built in 1895.  The house was built for Cape Girardeau attorney, Robert B. Oliver and his wife.   Judge Oliver served as the county prosecuting attorney, a state representative and in the state senate.   The Oliver-Leming House is where the Missouri State flag was designed and sewed by Marie Watkins Oliver, wife of former State Senator R. B. Oliver.  Missouri adopted the official flag on March 22, 1913.  The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white and blue.  These represent valor, purity, vigilance and justice.  In the center white stripe is the Missouri coat-of-arms, circled by a blue band containing 24 stars, denoting that Missouri was the 24th state.   The home is now a private residence.

The Oliver Leming House was listed on the National Registry in 1980.
