Deck the Halls with Holiday Crafts

Christmastime is nearly here – time to start thinking about greenery, wreathes and wrapping paper. “Fixer Upper” and other home renovation shows have made the old-fashioned, rustic look new again. Why not embrace the trend and design a farmhouse chic Christmas? Start by making sure you have the essentials.

Pine cones and greenery

Some of the most versatile decorations, adding touches of pine cones and greenery throughout your home serves as a subtle way to tie your holiday décor together. Drape garland along railings or incorporate sprigs into floral arrangements and centerpieces. For simple accents, fill bowls with pine cones to set the Christmas mood.

Wooden signs

Nothing says rustic Christmas like handmade wooden signs hung throughout your home. They’re easy to make. All you need is a plank of wood and some paint. You can include anything from a simple “Merry Christmas” to a line from your favorite carol – it’s up to you. And don’t stress over mistakes. It just adds to the country charm. If you don’t have time to create a sign yourself, find the perfect piece at one of Cape’s local shops.

DIY ornaments

Personalize your décor by displaying memories on the tree, so you’ll reflect and smile each time you walk by. Distressed wooden ornaments make a great backdrop for favorite photos and complement a farmhouse chic look – especially if the photos are black and white. Bonus: They make great gifts too. The easy solution

If you’re not ready to become a DIYer, you can still embrace the farmhouse style at the Arts and Crafts Extravaganza, featuring over 300 vendors selling only handmade items. In addition to ornaments, this Nov. 17 and 18 event offers photography, pottery, décor and delicious treats. With enough items to fill both the Show Me Center and the Osage Centre, there’s sure to be something that fits your taste. And don’t forget to stop by the VisitCape office at 220 N. Fountain St. to pick up a commemorative Cape Girardeau ornament for your tree.

Make plans to attend Cape’s other holiday events as well. See them all here.
