Cape County: Tales Along the River

Calling all bookworms! Not only is the state of Missouri known for its influence on literature (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Gone Girl, etc.) but Cape Girardeau specifically is equally as inspirational.
Several prolific authors have written books that delve into historical aspects of Cape Girardeau.
Today, we want to share those stories with you so that you can get the inside scoop on the next book you should read cuddled up on your couch on a rainy day.

If you like the paranormal genre, then Haunted Cape Girardeau: Where the River Turns a Thousand Chilling Tales is the book for you! Written by Joel Rhodes, this book takes you on a tour of the spooky specters that are known to reside here. You’ll find out the local hot spots for ghostly activity and the history behind their phenomenon.

Rhodes is a history professor at Southeast Missouri State University, and he has also authored and co-authored other books, so the information in Haunted Cape Girardeau is from a reliable source.

If you’re more interested in reading about the industrialization and modernization of Cape and southeast Missouri and you’re a fan of the works of Joel Rhodes, check out A Missouri Railroad Pioneer: The Life of Louis Houck.
This book dives into the life of Louis Houck, known as the “Father of Southeast Missouri”. It follows the works of Houck in southeast Missouri and how he transformed the Cape Girardeau area into an “era of economic individualism”.

Are you a fan of tales of found treasure and artifacts? Like to hear about lessons people have learned in life? Well, Dear Samuel Clemens: Message in a Bottle is a book that combines the two! This book is written by Randy Barnhouse, a treasure diver and excavator. Randy has taken part in the recovery of a sunken Mississippi riverboat located at Cape Girardeau; the Spanish shipwreck, Atocha; the Mark Twain boyhood home at Hannibal, Missouri; and the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet shipwrecks. In Dear Samuel Clemens: Message in a Bottle, Barnhouse connects his experience in those recoveries with what he learned in an interesting way.

Our final recommendation is for those folks who are intrigued by the topic of aliens! MO41: The Bombshell Before Roswell by Paul Blake Smith tells of the story of three extraterrestrials that were said to have crash-landed just outside of Cape Girardeau. Smith is a Cape Girardeau native, Southeast Missouri State University graduate and his father  worked in the suspected crash area, so his presentation of the historical facts are quite credible.

You’ll get great insight into the investigation behind this bizarre story and get to make your own decision on whether you think the claims are true or not!

These books aren’t the only Cape Girardeau inspired ones out there, but we hope these are a great start! If you give one of them (or all of them) a read, let us know what you thought!
