Cape's Finest Art

Between our melt-in-your-mouth barbecue and downtown’s antiquing paradise, a major Cape Girardeau bragging point gets overlooked – art.

We may not have the Mona Lisa on display, but an entire campus is dedicated to Southeast Missouri State’s fine arts programs. And a trip down Broadway is practically a sculpture exhibition.

Where to start

A fine arts campus wouldn’t be worth its salt without an art gallery. Southeast’s is located at the Crisp Museum on the River Campus. Exhibits frequently change, alternating between student work and prominent artists. If painting and sculpture aren’t really your thing, the museum also holds a history gallery that includes one of the largest Native American artifacts collections.

One final place you don’t want to miss during your stay is Catapult Creative House. No, you can’t build a giant machine that flings someone across the room, but they offer something just as cool. Located downtown on Broadway, Catapult serves as an inspirational, collaborative space for Southeast’s art, design and fashion students (plus more). The space contains a studio, gallery, printing press, coffee shop and even a place to buy student work.

Where to create

If your whole family wants to jump into Cape’s art scene, make plans to attend the admission-free River Campus Summer Arts Festival on Saturday, June 16 from 10 am to 5 pm. Bring the kids along – they won’t get bored.
The event includes
  • Live music
  • Theatrical performances
  • Magic
  • Art walk
  • Writing workshops
  • Petting zoo

Can’t make it to the Summer Arts Festival? Visit Cape on the first Friday of each month to enjoy First Friday With the Arts. Downtown businesses and galleries stay open late, hosting artist receptions, demonstrations and live music.

This is just the start of what Cape’s fine arts scene has to offer. If everything were included, this blog would become a book. But don’t take our word for it. Visit Cape and find out for yourself.

See you soon.
