Be a Tourist in Your Hometown: Jeanne Muckerman

Jeanne Muckerman might be Cape Girardeau’s biggest fan, and what better person to share her highlights of Cape Girardeau?

“Cape Girardeau really has something for everyone,” Muckerman says. “Whether you enjoy nature, history, the arts, dining out or shopping, this city has something to offer. We have beautiful parks and opportunities to take in the breathtaking Missouri landscape. You can spend some time in Capaha Park relaxing and watching the ducks or get physical and play a round of disc golf while you are there. If a little more quiet is what you desire, the hiking at Trail of Tears State Park or on White Oak Trace can allow that communion with Mother Nature. The forest comes alive with songbirds, wildflowers and squirrels each spring. Kids can explore at the Conservation Nature Center as well!”

Muckerman adds, “Let’s not leave out the river! The newly constructed and continually expanding River Walk offers views of the legendary Mississippi River. While downtown, you can check out the historic Glenn House or Louis Lorimier’s Red House Interpretive Center to get a glimpse into the past of this amazing town and its residents.”

“Downtown Cape offers a variety of dining and our favorite spot is Port Cape Girardeau,” Muckerman notes of her and her husband, Jake. “The building dates back to before 1837 and they offer some terrific barbeque! Broussard’s Cajun Cuisine offers a spicy taste of New Orleans which is another local favorite. We have fine dining establishments or a few places to grab a quick sandwich too.”

Muckerman encourages visitors to “take a short stroll down Main Street, and you’ll find quaint shops with friendly owners who appreciate people shopping local. A lot of my personal wardrobe and home décor has come from these lovely places. If you are a picker of sorts, our antique stores can keep you busy all afternoon. Award winning Annie Laurie’s on Broadway has been featured in several publications and really puts a unique spin on your traditional expectation of an antique shop.”

“Cape Girardeau has a thriving art community with the addition of the public art displays on Broadway. Annually, the exhibit rotates and our city is constantly looking to add interest to draw people downtown and out of their normal routine. This is a nice addition to the Mississippi River Tales Murals that give an overview of the history of this area.”  Muckerman mentioned that “First Friday with the Arts is also a favorite of mine when the local galleries open their doors for evening hours to allow people to view local and traveling artists work.”

“If music is your thing, try out Friday evenings at the Common Pleas Courthouse gazebo for Tunes At Twilight. Musicians and songwriters play to several hundred people enjoying a picnic and community throughout this summer series.”

Muckerman says that, “regardless of your interest, there is probably something to fit your vacation plan in Cape Girardeau. The friendly people of our city are ready to greet you with a warm smile and welcoming spirit. I hope to see you soon!”

Many thanks to Jeanne for spotlighting her favorite parts of Cape Girardeau!  If you were showing a visitor around our river city, what would you be sure to take them to?
