Description:

Join local reenactors at Fort D Historic Site as they honor the memory of fallen soldiers past and present on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018 from 9 am to 3 pm. First known as Decorations Day it was a day to lay flowers at the graves of soldiers who died in service to their country. Today that custom continues on the 4th Monday of May, a federal holiday now known as Memorial Day. As you step onto the grounds of Fort D, take a moment to look at the earthen walls and the rifle pits built in 1861 by local Cape Girardeau men under the direction of John Wesley Powell. Many of these same men went on to fight in Federal units, some losing their lives far from home. Read the interpretive signs that share the story of the only surviving fort of four built in Cape Girardeau and one of the last earthen forts surviving in Missouri. Learn about Civil War weaponry as reenactors demonstrate rifle and cannon fire. Visit with reenactors portraying a sutler, a laundress, or even a musician. Walk inside the 1937 WPA constructed limestone building and note the American Legion emblem above the doorway. Not original to the grounds of Fort D, this building has its own rich history. Built as a museum structure, it was once owned by the American Legion, serving as its meeting place. To learn more about Fort D Historic Site – make it your destination on Memorial Day 2018.
