5 Wineries to Visit this Spring in Southeast Missouri

Spring has arrived, and what better way to celebrate the warmer weather and sunny skies than at a winery around Cape Girardeau!  Here are five wineries to check out and some of my favorite things at each.

1. Apple Creek Winery & Vineyard

It’s tough to beat the view at Apple Creek Winery & Vineyard, about 20 minutes northwest of Cape Girardeau.  Decks and picnic tables (complete with buckets to ice down your chardonnay handy) overlook meandering Apple Creek.  Kiddos play in the shallow waters while their grown-ups keep an eye on them from their perch on the deck.  The themed dinners are always fun – they have a crawfish boil coming up in May!  Tucked away off exit 117, Apple Creek is a great getaway where you can really slow down for an afternoon.

2. Thousand Oaks Winery

Thousand Oaks Winery is 110% worth the pretty drive 30 minute drive to this heavily wooded, peaceful spot northwest of Cape Girardeau.  You’ll meet Dante, their wood-fired brick oven that turns out pizza you will dream about.  The property overlooks a wooded pond, and it’s so nice to sip wine and sink into the quiet while your pizza cooks.

3. Hunter Valley Winery

Closer to Cape, Hunter Valley Winery is only 15 minutes north of historic downtown.  Live music is a fixture, and Gypsy, the owner’s sweet Beagle, will cozy up to your table with imploring eyes as soon as your food arrives. They have a great selection of microbrews for the non-wine fans in your group, and their strawberry wine paired with dark chocolate chips is perfect.  Hunter Valley is just a few minutes away from Trail of Tears State Park making it a great post-hike gathering place.

4.  Steele Crest Winery

Sample 16 varieties of wine at Steele Crest Winery, then settle in on the wrap around porch to enjoy (more) wine, tasty appetizers and snacks. Steele Crest is only a few miles from Hunter Valley, making for a fun afternoon.

5. River Ridge Winery

River Ridge Winery is about 30 minutes south of Cape Girardeau in a century-old farm house.  Open throughout the week, it’s the perfect spot to play hooky on a sunny afternoon!  The queso fries and the strawberry shortcake are personal favorites, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay are thriving in River Ridge’s vineyard.
