With 3,415 acres of pristine scenery, Trail of Tears State Park offers some of Missouri’s most breathtaking scenery. The park is a certified site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, commemorating the forced relocation of the Cherokee to Oklahoma. The interpretive center has exhibits that detail this American tragedy as well as the park’s many natural features.

Licensed anglers can cast their lines in Lake Boutin, which is stocked with bluegill, catfish and bass. An observation deck positioned high atop one of the park’s majestic river bluffs provides a very impressive view of the Mississippi River. Hikers can tackle one of the park’s numerous trails, including Peewah and Sheppard Point. In winter months, the river bluffs serve as roosting sites for bald eagles. Camping sites ranging from primitive to RV ready are available. Trail of Tears State Park is only 12 miles north of downtown Cape Girardeau was recently voted the #1 heritage trail by Midwest Living Magazine.

Sheppard Point Trail is closed indefinitely.  For questions, please contact Trail of Tears State Park at 573-290-5268.
